nicolaj kirisits

Nicolaj Kirisits is an Austrian architect and sound artist who explores the relationship between space, sound and perception. His work is situated at the intersection of architecture, media art and experimental music, with sound as a sculptural and interactive element playing a central role in his installations.

Kirisits was born in Vienna in 1967 and studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna as well as electroacoustic and experimental music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since 2003, he has been a senior artist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he heads the SoundArtLab in the digital art department. There he develops innovative design strategies for time-based structures in media installations, with a particular focus on the spatial dimension of sound.

His works have been presented internationally, including at renowned festivals such as Ars Electronica (AT), Siggraph (USA), File Festival (BRA), Bienal de La Habana (CUB) and the 5th Moscow Biennale (RUS). Kirisits also works as an architect and, together with Günter Lautner, has won several architectural competitions in the field of urban development and residential construction. Since 2013, he has increasingly focused on building single-family homes, renovations and furniture design.

In addition to his artistic and academic activities, Kirisits is also active as a curator and has initiated numerous projects dealing with sound art and interactive media installations. He has received several awards for his work, including the Schütte-Lihotzky Scholarship from the Republic of Austria and the Departure Project Scholarship from the City of Vienna.

His PhD project at the TU Vienna, titled ‘Notation of Sound Spaces: How to Think Architecture sonically’, will be completed in the summer of 2025. His work connects science, art and architecture and creates new perspectives on the perception and design of space through sound.
